About Midsummer Match Cup

With Midsummer Match Cup we are introducing a new and unique concept in match racing. There have been major competitions with mixed teams before, for example the Volvo Ocean Race, where a change to the rules made it advantageous to include women in the teams. Midsummer Match Cup will be the first Match Racing Competition in the world where the rules stipulate that each team should be mixed, with at least two men and two women onboard.

Midsummer Match Cup also introduces Skärhamn, a gem on the Swedish West Coast, as a new international sailing venue. Initiator to the competition is top ranked Swedish skipper Johnie Berntsson who resides in Stenungsund and has been an active match racer for many years.

What is Match Racing?

In Match Racing two identical boats compete against each other. The concept is simple - first across the finish line wins - but that doesn’t make it an easy sport! One needs a clear strategy and the ability to sail the boat as fast as possible to win. The combatants use all the tricks in the (rule) book to incur penalties on their opponent during the race.

The course is always leeward-windward and generally takes somewhere between 10-20 minutes to complete. The action ensues 4 minutes prior to the starting signal when the boats simultaneously “gate in” onto the arena from different directions. After that it is up to the two teams to try to outmaneuver each other to secure the best starting position possible, whilst at the same time trying to give your opponent the worst possible starting position, ideally with one or two penalties.

In match racing, each race is officiated by umpires who follow each pair of boats and make on-course penalty decisions. Unlike in fleet racing, the penalized boat does not have to complete its penalty turn directly, but may at any time during the race prior to the finish line. If penalties are offsetting, penalty turns need not be completed. You are only allowed to “carry” one penalty, if you get a second penalty when the race is in session, you have to turn immediately. If one boat receives three penalties, it is disqualified and the race is over.

It doesn’t matter if you win by 30 centimeters or 300 meters, a win, however small, is a win, and a loss is a loss.
